KOLKATA, INDIA — Festive joy turned into profound grief in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata as a devastating crowd crush during the Durga Puja celebrations claimed the lives of at least 17 people and injured dozens of others.
The tragic incident unfolded during the multi-day annual Hindu festival, which traditionally draws massive numbers of devotees and sightseers to temporary decorative pavilions, known as pandals, housing idols of the goddess Durga.
The fatal surge occurred during the evening hours at a crowded temporary pavilion located in the city's Chorbagan Sarbojanin neighborhood near Girish Park. Thousands of visitors had gathered to view the festive displays when a sudden, heavy downpour struck the area.
As large numbers of people rushed simultaneously toward the exits or attempted to squeeze into the pavilion structure for shelter from the driving rain, intense panic and severe congestion broke out. The resulting bottleneck created a catastrophic human crush near the exit gates, overwhelming the crowd management measures in place.
Local emergency responders, police, and volunteers rushed to the scene, transporting the injured—some on motorcycles and others via emergency vehicles—to nearby hospitals. Organizers swiftly closed the pavilion to visitors as rescue operations took priority.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep distress over the tragedy, sharing his condolences with the bereaved families. The Prime Minister’s office announced financial compensation for the next of kin of those who lost their lives, as well as monetary relief for individuals recovering from injuries. State authorities have since launched an inquiry into the incident to review crowd safety protocols and prevent similar occurrences during large public gatherings.
In response to the disaster, municipal corporations and event organizers across the state have initiated urgent safety audits of all remaining festival pavilions. Authorities are deploying additional police barricades and increasing coordination with volunteer networks to manage crowd flows and ensure safe exits as celebrations continue elsewhere in the city.
