Tragedy in Kolkata: 1 Dead, 19 Injured After Building Collapses in Jorabagan

KOLKATA, India — Disaster struck the bustling Jorabagan neighborhood in North Kolkata after an old, dilapidated building suddenly collapsed, killing at least one person and injuring 19 others.

The incident occurred during peak morning hours when a significant portion of the multi-story structure caved in without warning, trapping several residents and passersby beneath heaps of brick and concrete debris. Shocked bystanders immediately raised the alarm and began clearing light rubble before emergency services arrived at the scene.

Teams from the Kolkata Disaster Management Group (DMG), the Fire and Emergency Services, and local police launched an intensive search and rescue operation. Using heavy cutters, earthmovers, and sniffer dogs, rescue personnel worked tirelessly through the wreckage to extract individuals trapped under the collapsed masonry.

Medical crews dispatched to the site transported 20 extracted victims to nearby healthcare facilities, including the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital. Doctors confirmed that one elderly resident succumbed to severe crush injuries upon arrival, while 19 others are currently receiving treatment for various injuries ranging from fractures to minor trauma.

Local residents revealed that the building was decades old and had visible structural cracks, which had been exacerbated by recent continuous rains. Preliminary assessments by civic officials suggest that long-standing structural neglect, coupled with moisture damage, likely triggered the catastrophic structural failure.

Municipal authorities have cordoned off the immediate vicinity and ordered a temporary evacuation of adjacent structures as a precautionary measure to prevent further casualties. An official inquiry has been instituted to assess responsibility and determine if formal notices regarding dangerous structures had previously been served to the property owner.

Following the tragic event, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) announced an accelerated audit of all registered high-risk and heritage-era buildings across North Kolkata's densely populated wards. Civil engineers and safety inspectors are scheduled to begin door-to-door structural evaluations to identify compromised properties, issue immediate eviction orders where necessary, and prevent similar disasters during the ongoing monsoon season.
