KOHIMA, NAGALAND — One person was killed and another injured in a violent confrontation between members of the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities in Nagaland’s Kiphire district. The clash, which escalated into gunfire and arson across multiple villages, has drawn widespread concern from regional authorities and community elders.
The violence erupted in the Pungro sub-division following disputes related to the celebration of the Tikhir community’s Tsonglaknyi festival in co-inhabited villages. Armed confrontations were reported around Longtsunger and Zaonger villages, resulting in fatal gunfire that left one dead and another severely wounded. In addition to the casualties, several residential houses and properties were torched in parts of Zaonger village and Pungro town, sending smoke over the surrounding hills as residents fled for safety.
In response to the sudden surge in violence, the Kiphire district administration swiftly imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The directive strictly prohibits assemblies of five or more people, the carrying of firearms or weapons, and any provocative actions across affected areas in Pungro sub-division. Additional security personnel, alongside local police forces, have been deployed to vulnerable pockets to prevent further escalation and restore public order.
Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Yanthungo Patton issued an urgent call for calm, urging leaders from both the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities to cooperate with law enforcement and seek peaceful resolution through dialogue. Echoing this sentiment, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO), the apex tribal body in the region, appealed directly to both tribal councils to intervene immediately and prevent further hostilities. Authorities remain on high alert as security operations and forensic investigations continue.
Meanwhile, peace committees comprising neutral civil society organizations and faith-based groups have begun coordinating with district officials to establish channels of communication between the aggrieved parties. Community elders are urging youth members to exercise restraint and avoid spreading rumors on social media, emphasizing that long-term harmony and dialogue are essential to preventing further tragedy and rebuilding trust across the district.
