Tragedy in Khartoum: Armed Gunman Attacks Egyptian Truck Drivers, Leaving 2 Dead and 1 Injured

KHARTOUM, SUDAN — Two Egyptian truck drivers were killed and a third was seriously injured after an armed gunman opened fire on a group of Egyptian transport workers in Sudan’s capital.

The fatal attack unfolded when the suspect approached a group of commercial freight vehicles parked south of the capital. Without warning, the gunman discharged a firearm directly at the drivers, leaving two dead at the scene and inflicting severe injuries on a third. Emergency services and local law enforcement responded to the incident shortly after reports were made.

Sudanese authorities confirmed that police have apprehended the 23-year-old suspect, identified as Ibrahim Abdullah Adam, following a brief shootout that also left a police officer wounded. During initial questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the shooting.

"The investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and its motives," local police said in a statement following the arrest.

Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is closely monitoring the situation in Khartoum. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty instructed Egypt's Ambassador to Sudan, Yasser Sorour, to coordinate with Sudanese officials to oversee emergency medical treatment for the surviving driver and expedite the repatriation of the victims' remains.

The Governor of Khartoum State personally met with Egyptian diplomatic officials to convey condolences and offer support as medical teams oversee urgent surgery for the injured driver. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close diplomatic ties while joint investigations proceed.

In light of the incident, regional transport syndicates have called for heightened security measures along major cross-border commercial routes to safeguard logistics drivers operating between Egypt and Sudan. Union representatives emphasized that truck drivers play a vital role in sustaining bilateral trade and essential supply chains, urging authorities to implement security checkpoints and escort protocols for freight convoys.

Meanwhile, local security forces in Khartoum have increased patrols around key transport hubs, industrial zones, and parking grounds where cross-border freight operators routinely halt. Authorities expressed confidence that the swift arrest of the suspect will help reassure international commercial drivers as broader measures are evaluated to reinforce public safety throughout the capital.
