Tragedy in Khan Younis: Eight Killed, Including Mother and Daughter, in Strike on Displaced Families’ Tents

GAZA STRIP — A series of Israeli airstrikes across Gaza on Monday, June 29, 2026, claimed the lives of at least eight Palestinians, marking a violent escalation despite an ongoing ceasefire that has been in place since October 2025.

The deadliest of the day's strikes occurred in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. According to medical sources at Nasser Hospital, an Israeli strike hit a tent sheltering displaced families, killing a 23-year-old mother and her one-year-old daughter. Eyewitnesses reported that the attack caused extensive destruction to the tents and the personal belongings of the displaced residents.

The Khan Younis region experienced further casualties on Monday, beginning with a strike on the town of Qarara, northwest of the city, which claimed the life of a 31-year-old man who had married only months earlier. Additionally, an attack on a tent located in the Khan Younis coastal area resulted in two deaths and left 13 others wounded.

Furthermore, one Palestinian was killed and a young girl was wounded near the Bani Suheila roundabout east of Khan Younis after Israeli forces opened fire on a gathering of civilians.

The violence extended to central Gaza, where a drone strike hit a neighborhood in Deir al-Balah, killing at least three people, including an 8-year-old boy, Malik Abu Shawish, and his grandfather, Hassan al-Hanagra. Abu Shawish was reportedly visiting his mother’s tent at the time of the strike; his mother was among the seven people wounded in that attack.

While the heaviest fighting of the war has subsided since the October 2025 ceasefire, near-daily strikes have continued to result in casualties. According to health officials in Gaza, these ongoing violations have resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 Palestinians and left thousands more injured since the truce began.

The wounded from Monday's attacks were transported to various medical facilities, including the Nasser Medical Complex and the Kuwaiti and Al-Mawasi field hospitals, for urgent care. The Israeli military stated that some of the operations were targeting militants, though they did not provide specific details on the targets in the recent strikes.
