SINGAPORE — A routine tree-felling operation turned fatal in Katong on Tuesday afternoon, October 13, 2026, when a 38-year-old worker died after a tree collapsed at its base while he was working on it.
The incident occurred at a landed residential property along Cranborne Road, near Goodman Road in the Katong neighborhood.
The worker, identified as a Bangladeshi national employed by Soh & Tan Enterprises Pte Ltd, was engaged in tree-felling work at the premises around 2:30 PM.
According to preliminary details released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the tree unexpectedly toppled at its base while the worker was performing felling procedures, causing him to plunge to the ground alongside the falling tree.
Emergency services—including officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and responders from the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF)—were dispatched to the site at approximately 2:35 PM after receiving urgent calls for assistance.
The worker was conveyed unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Police have confirmed that preliminary investigations show no indication of foul play, though formal inquiries remain ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances leading up to the structural failure of the tree.
In response to the workplace fatality, MOM ordered Soh & Tan Enterprises to immediately suspend all tree-felling activities involving tree climbing pending the outcome of investigations.
MOM Safety Advisory: "As a general safety measure, employers should ensure that a suitable assessment of the tree and work methods is conducted before tree-felling works commence, and that the work is carried out by trained workers in accordance with established safe work procedures."
Tree-felling and arborist operations represent some of the most complex high-risk activities within residential maintenance, requiring careful evaluation of root stability, soil integrity, and controlled rigging.
The employer is currently assisting authorities with ongoing investigations and arranging support and funeral arrangements for the deceased worker's family.
