Tragedy in Karachi: 3 Security Personnel Martyred After Thwarting Audacious Attack on Rangers Facility

KARACHI, PAKISTAN — A heavily armed militant assault rocked Pakistan's commercial capital Saturday night, June 27, 2026 after a group of attackers targeted the Sindh Rangers' Bhittai Wing headquarters in the densely populated Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.

Three paramilitary troops were martyred while successfully preventing the attackers from fully breaching and capturing the strategic security compound.

The coordinated attack began at approximately 8:30 p.m. when a suspected suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the main entrance of the facility. The massive detonation heavily damaged the main gate and jolted nearby neighborhoods.

Immediately following the blast, a heavily armed assault team rushed the entrance. Armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately on the compound's perimeter.

"The ground felt like it does when there is an earthquake. When we came out there was smoke everywhere... then the gunfire started."— Mohammad Bakhsh, local restaurant owner Despite the initial chaos, Rangers personnel stationed inside the facility reacted rapidly, taking up defensive positions to engage the intruders in a fierce firefight.

Specialized reinforcements, including police commandos from the Special Security Unit (SSU) and the Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF), rushed to the location to seal off the surrounding roads near Mosamiat Chowrangi.

A grueling 90-minute gun battle ensued as security forces launched a methodical clearance operation inside the compound. According to Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho, the high readiness of the troops effectively contained the attackers at the periphery, foiling an attempt to seize control of the installation.

Four of the attackers were neutralized during the intense exchange of gunfire. Emergency response teams from the Edhi Foundation transferred the bodies of the martyred soldiers and several wounded individuals to a nearby hospital.

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar—a faction of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)—claimed responsibility for the brazen raid late Saturday night.

The attack underscores a concerning shift as a recent surge in militant activity, which has heavily impacted provinces bordering Afghanistan, threatens to spill back into Pakistan's major urban centers. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed top police and provincial intelligence officials to submit a comprehensive investigative report on the security breach.
