Tragedy in Kano: Four Trapped After Two-Storey Building Collapses on Sultam Road

KANO, Nigeria — Emergency workers and local volunteers are racing against time on Sultam Road after a two-storey building under construction catastrophically collapsed on Friday afternoon, July 10, 2026 trapping at least four construction workers beneath the heavy concrete rubble.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m., shortly after workers returned from afternoon prayers, sending a shockwave of dust and debris through the busy commercial area.

First responders from the Kano State Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) quickly mobilized to the scene. Due to the density of the collapsed concrete slabs, manual rescue efforts were initially slow, prompting authorities to deploy heavy excavators to carefully lift the structural debris.

Shouts from trapped victims could reportedly be heard beneath the wreckage during initial quiet periods designated by rescue teams to pinpoint survival locations.

Dozens of local youth and neighbors joined hands with official rescue teams, forming human chains to move smaller pieces of broken blockwork and twisted iron rods away from the main excavation site. Medical teams and ambulances from nearby hospitals remain stationed at the perimeter, ready to administer emergency trauma care the moment the trapped individuals are extricated.

"We heard a loud cracking sound like a gunshot, followed by a thunderous crash," said Aliyu Bello, an eyewitness who operates a shop opposite the construction site. "Before the dust could even settle, everyone ran toward the site to see who we could pull out. We know at least four men were working on the upper level right before it came down."

While the immediate focus remains entirely on the active life-saving operations, questions are already being raised regarding the quality of the construction materials and structural oversight.

Kano State building control officials arrived at the scene to secure the original building plans. A formal investigation into the root cause of the collapse—specifically looking at structural design adherence and concrete mixing ratios—will commence immediately following the conclusion of the rescue mission.
