Tragedy in Himachal: 4 Killed, 1 Injured as Car Plunges into Deep Gorge in Kullu

KULLU, India — A tragic road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district claimed the lives of four individuals and left one critically injured early Tuesday morning after their vehicle skidded off National Highway 305 and plunged into a steep gorge. The five occupants were returning home from a wedding ceremony in Kumarsain when the vehicle lost control between Nigan and Nimla.

Local residents who heard the crash alerted emergency authorities, prompting a swift response from local police, fire service crews, and district administration teams.

Rescue teams faced significant hurdles reaching the site due to the steep terrain and the depth of the ravine. Operations continued for hours as emergency personnel navigated the rugged landscape to reach the wreckage and extract the passengers.

Local authorities confirmed the immediate casualties from the crash, stating that four young men from Jabo village in the Anni subdivision died on impact due to severe trauma. Meanwhile, a 29-year-old passenger survived the plunge with severe injuries; emergency teams stabilized him at a nearby community health center before transferring him to Rampur Hospital for advanced trauma care.

The Kullu District Disaster Management Authority and local police have launched a formal investigation to determine the precise cause of the accident. Preliminary assessments indicate the driver may have lost control on a sharp bend along the narrow highway.

Police officials confirmed that post-mortem examinations are underway and that reports will be handed over to the grieving families. Meanwhile, regional leaders have reiterated calls for reinforced crash barriers and enhanced night-visibility signage along high-risk stretches of mountain highways across the state.

In the wake of the tragedy, local community leaders and transport unions have expressed deep grief and called on the state government to expedite financial relief for the victims' families. They also urged immediate safety audits on treacherous mountain routes to prevent similar devastating accidents as the region enters the hazardous autumn and winter travel seasons.
