GWALIOR, MADHYA PRADESH — A late-night pilgrimage turned into a scene of horror and devastation early on Sunday morning, October 18, 2026 when an out-of-control truck carrying paddy breached police barricades and plowed through crowd-filled streets, roadside stalls, and devotees gathered near the revered Sheetla Mata Temple. Authorities confirmed that at least 11 people lost their lives in the crash, while 29 others sustained injuries, several of whom remain in critical condition.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 a.m. along a steep road leading from the direction of Chhinor toward the temple complex. Thousands of pilgrims had assembled in the area for Navratri celebrations when the heavily loaded vehicle careened down the incline.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck appeared overloaded and lost its brakes while descending the hill. It smashed through police stoppers and security checkpoints before tearing into nearby shops and running over pedestrians along the narrow roadway, finally coming to a halt after slamming directly into the outer wall and gate of the temple.
Eyewitness Account: "It happened so suddenly around 1:00 AM. The truck came speeding down, completely out of control, and crushed several roadside stalls and people in its path. There was complete chaos and panic everywhere."
Local police units and district emergency management teams rushed to the scene shortly after receiving alarms. Rescue personnel worked through the night to clear debris, extricate victims trapped underneath the vehicle, and transport the wounded to nearby hospitals.
Authorities confirmed 11 fatalities at the scene and during initial medical transport, with victims ranging from young teenagers to adults. At least 5 to 6 individuals suffered severe trauma and fractures, while two police officers stationed at the security checkpoint were also injured during the breach. In response, hospital staff and specialized medical teams have been working continuously, carrying out emergency CT scans, X-rays, and urgent surgeries to stabilize the critically wounded.
The tragic crash has raised severe concerns over safety enforcement on restricted hill routes during major festival gatherings. District Collector Ruchika Chauhan confirmed that a full-scale inquiry is under way to determine how the commercial heavy vehicle managed to access the steep stretch despite active police barricades and heavy-traffic bans.
A technical team from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been deployed to examine the truck's mechanical condition to establish whether brake failure, driver negligence, or severe overloading caused the fatal loss of control. District officials assured that strict legal action will follow as investigators piece together the sequence of events leading up to the disaster.
