Tragedy in Glasgow: Patient Dies and Three Medics Injured After Ambulance Overturns

GLASGOW, Scotland — A tragic sequence of events unfolded in North Glasgow on Tuesday night when an ambulance transporting a patient flipped onto its side following a collision with a car, resulting in the death of the patient and injuring three emergency service workers.

The incident, which occurred at a busy crossroads, has sparked an immediate investigation and led to the arrest of the car's driver.

The crash took place just before 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the junction of Balmore Road and Ashgill Road. According to the Scottish Ambulance Service, the emergency vehicle was actively en route to the hospital with a patient on board when it collided with a car.

The force of the impact caused the ambulance to roll violently onto its side, trapping the crew and the patient within the vehicle. Passersby and witnesses recounted a scene of immense panic as emergency backup crews rushed to the location.

A second ambulance was deployed immediately to the scene to extract the male patient and continue the urgent transport to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Tragically, despite the rapid intervention, Police Scotland confirmed that the man passed away at the hospital following a "medical matter".

The three medical personnel on board the overturned vehicle sustained injuries requiring hospitalization. Two paramedics were transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment, while a student paramedic was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The exact severity of the crew members' injuries has not yet been fully disclosed, though they are currently receiving medical attention.

The driver of the car involved in the collision, a 49-year-old man, was arrested by attending officers at the scene in connection with a road traffic offence.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated: "Around 9pm on Tuesday, 16 June, 2026, we were called to a report of a crash involving a car and an ambulance on Balmore Road, Glasgow. A male patient who was within the ambulance later died in hospital following a medical matter. The driver of the car, a 49-year-old man, was arrested in connection with a road traffic offence and enquiries are ongoing."

Balmore Road remained closed for several hours into Tuesday night as specialised collision investigators mapped the scene and worked to clear the overturned emergency vehicle. Authorities are currently appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who possesses dash cam footage of the junction at the time of the accident, to come forward to assist with ongoing enquiries.
