GÖRLITZ, Germany — A catastrophic residential building collapse has triggered a massive, high-stakes rescue operation in the eastern city of Görlitz, near the Polish border. Emergency services are racing against time to locate three people who remain missing beneath a mountainous pile of rubble. Local authorities suspect a powerful gas explosion was the root cause of the sudden destruction, which occurred late on Monday night, May 18, 2026.

The incident unfolded in the city center of Görlitz, Germany’s easternmost city, known internationally for its well-preserved historic old town district. The collapsed property was a historic Wilhelminian-style building that housed a mix of standard rental units and vacation apartments.

The force of the blast completely leveled the structure. One eyewitness recounted the horrifying speed of the disaster; having arrived earlier that day for a holiday with his wife and cousin, the man stepped out to shop at a nearby supermarket. While inside the store, he heard a massive explosion. Upon rushing back, he found the holiday home entirely gone, replaced only by a massive heap of debris. His wife and cousin are feared to be among those trapped.

First responders and specialized disaster relief units from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) deployed immediately to the scene. Initial fears suggested that up to five individuals were buried, though police later clarified that the official number of missing persons stands at three.

The recovery operation is proving to be exceptionally dangerous. Because of the ongoing threat of secondary gas leaks, emergency crews have had to operate with extreme caution. After specialized K9 search dogs were unable to safely pinpoint survivors through the dense debris, rescuers shifted tactics around 2:00 AM on Tuesday.
