Tragedy in Fresno: 2 Dead, 2 Critical After Small Plane Crashes in Northwest Neighborhood

FRESNO, Calif. — Two people were killed and two others critically injured on Saturday afternoon, September 5, 2026, when a single-engine plane crashed near Sierra Sky Park Airport in Northwest Fresno.

Emergency dispatchers received multiple distress calls reporting a small fixed-wing aircraft down near Blythe Avenue along the bluff of the San Joaquin River. According to the Fresno Fire Department and Fresno County Sheriff's Office, first responders arrived on the scene to find the wreckage of a Grumman American AA-5 airplane engulfed in flames. Firefighting crews quickly deployed hose lines to extinguish the blaze and prevent spot fires from spreading to nearby residential properties.

Authorities confirmed four individuals were on board the aircraft at the time of the impact. Two passengers—identified by law enforcement as children—were pronounced deceased at the scene. Paramedics rushed two surviving adults in critical condition to a local trauma center, where both remain in intensive care. The collision also caused brief, localized power outages for nearby residents before Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) crews restored grid service.

Federal aviation regulators and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation into the incident. Federal investigators are on site to document the wreckage before transporting the airframe to a secure facility for mechanical, weather, and flight telemetry evaluations.

Preliminary Radar Data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicates the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude shortly after departing from Sierra Sky Park Airport. Air traffic control logs revealed no emergency radio broadcast prior to the descent, leading investigators to focus on potential engine failure or rapid control system degradation during the initial climb phase.

City officials have expressed condolences to the families affected by the crash and commended the swift action of emergency personnel who contained the fire before it reached nearby homes. The NTSB's preliminary report is expected to be released within 15 days, though a full determination of the probable cause could take up to 12 to 18 months to finalize.
