Tragedy in Farwaniya: One Dead, Two Injured After Afternoon Apartment Fire

FARWANIYA, KUWAIT — A devastating fire ripped through a residential apartment in the densely populated Farwaniya area on Monday afternoon, June 22, 2026 leaving one person dead and two others hospitalized with severe injuries. The incident prompted a rapid deployment of emergency response teams who fought to contain the blaze and rescue trapped residents.

The Directorate General of Fire Force (KFDF) received an emergency call reporting a structure fire in a multi-story residential building located in Farwaniya during the busy afternoon hours.

Firefighting units from both the Farwaniya and local tactical rescue stations were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders encountered thick black smoke billowing from a second-floor apartment, with flames rapidly spreading to adjacent units and threatening upper levels.

Terrified residents scrambled to evacuate the building via smoke-filled stairwells, while several individuals remained trapped inside their apartments due to the intense heat and zero-visibility conditions.

Firefighters immediately split into two teams: one to actively combat the inferno and prevent it from engulfing the entire complex, and a specialized search-and-rescue team to breach the burning apartment.

Equipped with breathing apparatuses, rescue teams navigated the heavy smoke and successfully evacuated dozens of residents from the upper floors. However, during the clearing of the primary apartment where the fire originated, firefighters discovered three unresponsive individuals.

Medical emergency teams treated the victims at the scene before rushing them to a nearby hospital. Authorities later confirmed that one of the victims succumbed to severe smoke inhalation and burns. The remaining two victims are currently in critical but stable condition, receiving intensive treatment for respiratory trauma.

After nearly an hour of aggressive firefighting operations, teams successfully brought the blaze under complete control and began ventilation procedures to clear the remaining toxic gases from the building. The structural integrity of the affected floor is being assessed by local safety officials. Meanwhile, investigators from the Fire Investigation Department have launched a full inquiry to determine the exact cause of the ignition—whether it stemmed from an electrical short circuit, an appliance malfunction, or another domestic hazard.

Local authorities have reiterated the importance of installing functional smoke detectors and maintaining clear escape routes in high-density residential buildings to prevent future tragedies.
