KATLEHONG, EKURHULENI — Tragic news has struck the community of Zonkizizwe Extension 6 in Katlehong, where a 38-year-old wheelchair-bound man lost his life early on Friday morning, October 9, 2026 in a rapid and destructive informal settlement fire.
According to local emergency services and neighbors, the fire ignited without warning inside the victim's single-room corrugated iron structure. Due to mobility limitations, the victim was unable to navigate past the fast-spreading flames, leaving him trapped inside as the structure was quickly engulfed.
Nearby residents reported seeing thick smoke pouring from the dwelling and rushed to assist before emergency responders arrived on the scene. Despite desperate efforts by community members to throw water on the structure and break through the metal panels, the intensity of the heat and swiftness of the blaze prevented them from reaching him in time.
Disaster Management and Fire Services from the City of Ekurhuleni arrived shortly after receiving urgent distress calls. Firefighters managed to suppress the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent homes in the tightly packed informal settlement. However, upon clearing the scorched debris, rescue personnel discovered the body of the 38-year-old victim inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local police and fire investigators have launched an inquiry to establish the precise cause of the fire. While preliminary reports have not yet identified an official cause, preliminary assessments point toward potential sources such as a heating appliance, an unmonitored candle, or an electrical fault—common hazards in informal residential structures.
The tragic incident has renewed calls from local community leaders for enhanced fire safety interventions, early-warning smoke detection systems, and improved accessibility support for disabled individuals living within vulnerable informal settlements across Ekurhuleni.
Police investigations remain ongoing, and local relief agencies are coordinating support for the victim's grieving family and affected neighbors.
