DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — What was supposed to be a milestone celebration of youth and adventure ended in an unimaginable family tragedy on Thursday, July 16, 2026. An 18-year-old tourist visiting Dubai from Mauritius drowned in a devastating Jet Ski accident on the exact day she turned 18, leaving her date of birth and date of death tragically identical.

Her 17-year-old relative, who was also on the watercraft, narrowly escaped death after a high-stakes marine rescue operation by the Dubai Police.

The two teenagers had traveled from Mauritius to the Gulf metropolis for a dream holiday to celebrate the victim’s 18th birthday. According to Dubai authorities, the tragedy unfolded as they were wrapping up their Jet Ski ride and decided to switch positions on the watercraft during the return leg. The younger, less experienced 17-year-old relative took control of the steering, but within moments, she accelerated, lost control of the powerful machine, and veered violently off course. The Jet Ski then crashed directly into a stone breakwater, ejecting both girls into the sea at high speed.

The birthday girl drowned at the scene. Her relative was thrown forcefully against the jagged rocks of the breakwater, sustaining severe, life-threatening injuries.

First Lieutenant Meera Al Hadad, Head of the Victim Support Team at the Dubai Police Port Station, described the heartbreaking emotional toll of the incident.

"The most painful part was that it happened on her 18th birthday," First Lieutenant Al Hadad shared. "She was very young, and her family had come to Dubai to celebrate a special occasion that was meant to be filled with joy."

Following emergency calls, Dubai Police marine rescue teams launched a rapid-response operation, pulling the critically injured 17-year-old survivor from the rocks.

The teenager, who suffered severe orthopedic and internal trauma including a critical leg injury, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors performed multiple emergency surgeries to stabilize her. Officers noted that the victim was exceptionally close to death, and the mere minutes saved by the swift dispatch of rescue vessels proved to be the difference between life and death.

The Dubai Police's specialized Victim Support Team—comprising First Lieutenant Meera, Captain Waleed, and Major Khalil—has remained in constant contact with the grieving family. They have coordinated hospital arrangements, translated medical updates, and provided mental health and logistical support to the family as they navigate their loss in a foreign country.
