Tragedy in Downtown Minneapolis: 2 Dead, 3 Officers Wounded in High-Rise Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A terrifying scene unfolded in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon, September 3, 2026 when a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise apartment building near the Minneapolis Convention Center. The mass shooting left two victims dead, multiple civilians injured, and three responding police officers wounded before the suspect was found dead inside the complex.

Emergencies began pouring into 911 dispatches around 4:30 p.m. reporting gunshots fired inside the densely populated residential tower. Officers arrived at the scene within minutes, stepping into a frantic lobby where several gunshot victims were already collapse-stricken.

As law enforcement units entered to clear the structure, additional shots echoed from the upper levels. Officers pressed upward toward the gunfire, encountering a thick, disorienting haze that obscured their sightlines along the corridors.

"As officers quickly moved from unit to unit to assist anyone who needed help, I can't emphasize enough how dangerous this situation was," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a news conference. "But for their heroic work, the death toll would have been far higher."

During the tense hallway search, officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Three Minneapolis police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation: two suffered direct gunshot wounds—one to the leg and another to the abdomen—while a third officer suffered non-gunshot injuries during the tactical maneuver.

All three officers were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center and are in stable condition, expected to make full recoveries.

Tragically, two civilians lost their lives. Authorities confirmed one victim died at the scene, while a second succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the emergency room. Hennepin Healthcare reported receiving seven total patients from the incident.

The gunman was later located dead on an upper floor. While police have not officially confirmed the cause of death, preliminary investigations point toward a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Residents who fled the high-rise recounted moments of sheer terror and noted that the suspected shooter—believed to be a fellow tenant—had previously raised concerns in the building.

Julius Bailey, a tenant who was outside when shots rang out, recalled seeing a familiar resident carrying a handgun into the building. "I heard a woman screaming and immediately started running," Bailey said, noting the resident was known for flaunting weapons around the complex.

Another resident, Chris Miller, stated he had encountered someone carrying a firearm in the hallways earlier in the week and had reported the suspicious activity to building management.

The violent outburst triggered a massive law enforcement convergence. Tactical teams, tactical units from the FBI, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) secured the surrounding blocks, while nearby institutions—including the University of St. Thomas—issued precautionary shelter-in-place orders.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz voiced support for the victims and responding crews, stating, "Minnesota is praying for our first responders and law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors."

State and federal authorities continue to assist the Minneapolis Police Department as homicide investigators work to uncover the shooter's motive and build a timeline of the tragedy.
