MAGPET, COTABATO — A weekend ride turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a local couple lost their lives when their motorcycle veered off a winding highway and plunged into a deep ravine in Barangay Pangao-an, Magpet, Cotabato.
The victims were pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel due to severe head trauma and internal injuries sustained from the steep fall.
According to preliminary reports from the Magpet Municipal Police Station, the couple was traveling along a known hazardous stretch of the highway around late afternoon when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while navigating a sharp downhill curve.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the motorcycle wobbled before crashing through the road's perimeter barriers and tumbling down the estimated 50-foot rocky incline.
Passersby immediately alerted local authorities, prompting a joint emergency response from the Magpet Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), local police, and volunteer responders.
Retrieval operations proved challenging due to the steep, slippery terrain and dense vegetation covering the ravine. Rescuers had to use specialized ropes and stretchers to carefully haul the victims back up to the main road.
Traffic investigators are currently looking into potential factors that caused the crash, including mechanical failure, brake failure, or slippery road conditions.
In light of the fatal incident, local municipal authorities and police have reiterated warnings to all motorists traveling through the mountainous areas of Cotabato. Drivers and riders are strongly advised to inspect their vehicles before long trips, adhere strictly to speed limits, and exercise extreme caution when navigating Magpet's sharp curves and steep drops.
Following the tragedy, local community leaders and residents have expressed growing concern over the safety of Barangay Pangao-an's mountain pass, urging infrastructure officials to install reinforced guardrails, improved street lighting, and clearer warning signs along the steep curves to prevent similar accidents in the future.
