DNIPRO, Ukraine — A devastating Russian drone strike hit a crowded railway platform in central Dnipro, killing at least 13 civilians and wounding five others. The attack targeted a regional civilian electric train parked at the station as passengers gathered on the platform.
The strike occurred as regional passenger train No. 866, bound for Zaporizhzhia, was stationed at the platform preparing for departure. According to state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia, the attack was carried out using a high-speed, jet-powered Russian drone that struck directly where commuters were waiting.
Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration head Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed the casualties, noting that emergency medical responders rushed to the scene to render first aid to the survivors. "There is a tragedy in Dnipro. A drone hit a civilian electric train. Many people have been killed. A large number have been injured," written by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov in an immediate update following the attack.
First responders, law enforcement, and rescue crews were dispatched to clear debris and pull survivors from the wreckage. Images and initial reports from the scene described heavy smoke, shattered glass, and severe damage to both the platform infrastructure and the exterior carriages of the train.
Railway officials noted that while an elevated threat warning had been issued across the regional transit network, a large crowd remained exposed on the open platform when the precision munitions' struck.
Ukraine’s extensive railway system serves as a crucial lifeline for civilian transit, medical evacuations, and logistics. Today's attack marks one of the single deadliest strikes on railway passenger infrastructure in recent months, highlighting the persistent danger faced by civilians traveling near the frontlines.
In response to the strike, international human rights organizations and Ukrainian officials reiterated calls for reinforced air defense systems over vital civilian transit hubs. State railway executives vowed that train schedules across the region would be rerouted and temporary service corridors established to keep essential travel moving, even as search-and-rescue operations continued late into the afternoon.
