Tragedy in Central Papua: 11 Dead, Including 6 Children, as Massive Fire Sweeps Through Babuda Market

PANIAI, INDONESIA — A devastating blaze swept through a market area in Bapouda Village, located in the East Paniai District of Central Papua province on Monday, September 7, 2026 claiming the lives of at least 11 people, six of whom were young children.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight, rapidly spreading across the densely built trading post. According to police spokesperson Henry J. Manurung, the victims included five adults ranging from ages 28 to 70 and six children between the ages of 2 and 9. Emergency responders and police who inspected the site following the disaster discovered the victims inside destroyed structures, all having suffered fatal burn injuries.

Firefighters and police deployed tactical vehicles, fire trucks, and water cannons in a desperate effort to contain the inferno. However, the response was severely hindered by how tightly packed the wooden kiosks, shop houses, and residential dwellings were constructed. The flames raged for over three hours before firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control around 3:30 a.m. local time.

By the time the fire was fully extinguished, at least 40 kiosks and homes had been completely reduced to ashes. Dozens of local families have been left displaced, losing both their livelihoods and personal belongings in the overnight tragedy.

Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the disaster. Police are currently examining the scene and gathering witness statements to determine how the fire originated in the remote riverine market community.

In the immediate aftermath, provincial government agencies dispatched emergency relief supplies, including food, clean water, and temporary shelter kits, to support the displaced families grieving in the remote district. Community leaders and local advocacy groups have called on regional officials to establish dedicated fire stations and enforce stricter building safety standards in rural Papuan markets, warning that without modernized infrastructure and accessible emergency routes, isolated villages remain acutely vulnerable to similar catastrophic fires.
