PARAÍBA, Brazil — A devastating head-on collision along highway BR-230 in northeastern Brazil has left at least six people dead and 15 others injured after a truck collided with a medical transport van carrying cancer patients to hospital appointments early Tuesday morning, October 27, 2026.
The violent crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. along the 227-kilometer stretch of the federal highway between the municipalities of Juazeirinho and Soledade, in the Agreste region of Paraíba.
According to reports from the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the vehicle was transporting local patients and their companions across the state for oncology treatments and specialized medical care at regional health centers when the truck crashed into the passenger van.
The force of the frontal impact crushed the front cabin of the van and damaged the truck, trapping multiple passengers inside. Emergency responders, including local fire crews and mobile emergency care services (SAMU), rushed to the remote stretch of highway to extract the victims.
Officials confirmed that among the six fatalities were two occupants of the truck and four passengers from the medical van.
"It is a profoundly heartbreaking tragedy. These were individuals already fighting severe illnesses, traveling early in the morning to access critical healthcare services," emergency responders noted at the scene.
The 15 injured survivors were stabilized at the scene before being rushed to the Emergency and Trauma Hospital of Campina Grande (Hospital de Trauma de Campina Grande) for urgent treatment. Medical staff reported that several patients suffered severe injuries and fractures due to the violent impact.
The Federal Highway Police and civil forensics teams have cordoned off the crash site along BR-230 to investigate the cause of the collision, examining visibility conditions, vehicle speed, and potential driver fatigue.
Municipal leaders from the surrounding towns expressed deep grief over the tragedy and declared an official period of mourning for the victims and their families. Local government authorities promised full support to the injured and their relatives, while highway safety officials reiterated calls for stricter nighttime traffic monitoring and improved safety measures along the heavily traveled BR-230 corridor.
