Tragedy in Batam: One Passenger Killed as Church Group Bus Overturns Near Melur Beach

Batam, Indonesia—A bus carrying a church congregation overturned this morning while traveling to New Melur Beach in Barelang, Batam. The incident occurred around 10:15 WIB, resulting in one confirmed fatality. Dozens of other passengers sustained injuries and were quickly evacuated by emergency services and local residents.

The Hino bus, which was transporting over 30 people for a planned prayer event, reportedly experienced a failure in its braking system as it approached the tourist area. The driver attempted to steer the vehicle to avoid a collision, but lost control, causing the bus to flip onto its side.

Rescue efforts at the scene were challenging due to the way the vehicle settled on the roadside, trapping three passengers inside. After a difficult extraction, the victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities, including RS Embung Fatimah and RS Graha Hermina. One victim, who had been trapped the longest, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police have begun an investigation into the mechanical condition of the bus, with the local traffic unit confirming they are analyzing the brake system to determine the cause of the failure. The driver is currently cooperating with authorities, and officials are still documenting the full list of passengers and their medical status.

The road leading to New Melur Beach was temporarily congested as rescue teams worked to right the vehicle and clear debris. Local authorities have used the incident to reiterate the necessity of strict vehicle maintenance, especially for public transport and tourism buses serving hilly coastal routes.

Community leaders and members of the church have gathered at the hospital to support the affected families. The investigation remains in its early stages as police continue to question witnesses and examine the bus logs. For now, the road has been cleared and traffic flow has been restored.
