Tragedy in Bajaur: Child Killed, Woman Injured in Suspected Quadcopter Attack

BAJAUR, PAKISTAN — A tragic aerial incident shook the volatile border region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday afternoon, June 28, 2026 when a suspected weaponized quadcopter struck a residential home, leaving a nine-year-old child dead and a woman severely injured. The attack took place in the remote Inam Khoro Chinagi area of the War Mamund tehsil, located within the Bajaur district along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

According to local police sources and neighborhood residents, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) appeared from an unknown location before firing an explosive shell directly at the house of a local resident named Hayatullah.

The blast immediately tore through the residential compound. Mehran, the 9-year-old son of Hayatullah, sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Another member of the household, 35-year-old Tahira Bibi, suffered severe shrapnel wounds and trauma in the sudden detonation.

Terrified neighbors rushed to the scene following the explosion to pull the victims from the damaged structure. Both the deceased child and the wounded woman were subsequently transported over rugged terrain to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Khar for medical evaluation and emergency treatment.

A senior police official confirmed the details of the strike, stating that a dedicated team from the War Mamund police station quickly deployed to the site to cordon off the area and collect forensic evidence.

Security forces are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into the flight path and payload characteristics of the drone. At this stage, authorities note it remains unconfirmed who operated the quadcopter, where it was launched from, or what the definitive motive was behind targeting the civilian home. No insurgent group or state actor has claimed responsibility for the deployment of the aircraft.

The deadly afternoon strike has sparked immense panic and widespread outrage across Bajaur. Tribal elders, lawmakers, and political leaders have voiced severe concerns regarding the evolving nature of the security threats in the frontier tribal belts.

Prominent local figures—including Bajaur Aman Jirga chief Sahibzada Haroon Rashid, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Dr. Hamidur Rehman, and Awami National Party (ANP) spokesperson Obaid ullah Khan Salarzai—strongly condemned the incident on social media. Describing the targeting of a civilian household as "unacceptable and intolerable," leaders have unified their voices to demand a transparent investigation, heightened state protection, and immediate financial compensation for the bereaved family.

The tragedy marks a troubling escalation in the region. Over the past few months, several border areas of Bajaur, specifically within the War and Lowi Mamund tehsils, have witnessed a string of similar drone and cross-border incidents that have repeatedly put innocent civilians, particularly women and children, directly in the crossfire.
