Tragedy in Assam: Four Family Members Swept Away by Raging Floodwaters in Charaideo

CHARAIDEO, ASSAM — A profound sense of grief and rising public anger have gripped Assam’s Charaideo district on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 after four members of the same family were swept away by powerful floodwaters. The incident occurred in Lakwa Abhayapuri village under the jurisdiction of the Tengapukhuri Police Station amid worsening monsoon conditions that have inundated the region.

The disaster unfolded when flash floodwaters suddenly breached and inundated the home of local resident Rohini Duwara. Realizing the imminent danger, the family made a desperate attempt to wade through the rising currents to reach safer, elevated ground.

Tragedy struck mid-transit when Rohini Duwara’s wife, Tutumoni Duwara, and their daughter, Bidisha Duwara, lost their footing and were rapidly carried away by the violent undercurrents. In a frantic, heroic bid to save them, the couple’s two sons, Bidyut Duwara and Biplab Duwara, plunged into the surging waters. Tragically, the strong currents proved too powerful, and both brothers were swept away as well.

As the four family members remain missing, a wave of indignation has swept through the local community over the perceived failure of emergency services.

Distraught relatives reported that they immediately tried contacting the district administration’s dedicated flood helpline, but their repeated calls went entirely unanswered. Out of options, family members managed to directly contact Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Dr. Neha Yadav, who reportedly offered reassurances that an emergency rescue team would be dispatched to the village without delay.

However, local villagers alleged that no official rescue personnel or police teams had arrived at the disaster site. The stark absence of government aid forced local residents to band together and launch their own makeshift search and recovery operations using local resources.

"We are entirely on our own while the waters continue to rise," noted a local villager involved in the search. "The delay during a critical, life-or-death emergency is completely unacceptable."

The tragedy highlights the ongoing volatility of the monsoon season in northeast India. While Assam's overall flood footprint has fluctuated, overflowing rivers and localized flash floods continue to pose fatal risks to rural communities. Charaideo remains among the severely impacted districts, with the state’s total flood-related death toll steadily climbing.
