VRINDAVAN, India — What was supposed to be a peaceful spiritual pilgrimage turned into a nightmare when a 21-year-old devotee was tragically electrocuted outside the world-famous ISKCON temple in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
The young man lost his life after coming into contact with a water-spray mist cooler that had been installed near the temple entrance to provide relief to pilgrims battling the intense summer heat wave. The incident has raised major concerns regarding public safety and the maintenance of utility equipment at crowded religious landmarks.
The victim, identified as Abhigyan Gupta, a resident of Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh, had traveled to the holy city alongside his father, Anil Kumar Gupta, to offer prayers.
The fatal accident transpired near the temple's shoe stand area, where a water-cooling and misting setup—allegedly managed by the Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation—was actively running. CCTV footage from the bustling walkway captured a normal flow of devotees passing through the area.
Suddenly, Abhigyan touched the cooler structure, which was unknowingly carrying a live electrical current. The high-voltage shock caused him to immediately lose his balance and shake violently before collapsing to the ground.
Bystanders initially hesitated to approach, fearing the presence of an active electrical current in the immediate vicinity. However, realizing the gravity of the situation, several onlookers and the victim's father rushed in to pull him away from the faulty installation. Reports indicate that the father also sustained a minor shock during his desperate bid to save his son.
Devotees and local residents quickly organized to transport an unconscious Abhigyan to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the impact of the shock proved fatal. Attending medical professionals confirmed that he showed no signs of life upon arrival.
"We received the patient after being informed that he had been electrocuted," the attending doctor stated. "On examination, his heart activity was entirely absent and his pupils were fully diluted. We carried out CPR and administered all necessary interventions, but unfortunately, nothing proved effective."
The tragedy grew even more painful at the medical facility, where video captured the grieving father weeping over his son's body, desperately pleading for him to wake up.
The victim's family has openly accused local authorities of severe negligence regarding the poor upkeep of public utilities and has demanded strict action.
A First Information Report (FIR) has officially been registered at the Vrindavan police station. Local police and electrical forensic teams have launched an investigation to inspect the wiring of the water-spray cooler and pinpoint exactly how the electrical leakage occurred. Religious tourism officials are now under pressure to implement stringent safety audits for all public infrastructure deployed for the pilgrimage season.
