GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR — A serene evening Mass turned into a scene of utter shock and sorrow when a parish priest was struck and killed by a massive wooden crucifix that suddenly detached from the sanctuary wall mid-service. The horrific accident, which unfolded during a live social media broadcast, has sent shockwaves through the local community and the global Catholic Church.
The tragic incident occurred at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro) in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a beloved member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), was conducting an evening service at the altar facing his congregation.
In a chilling turn of events, moments after delivering a sermon on faith, family, and the fragile, fleeting nature of human life, the heavy wooden crucifix mounted high above the altar broke loose. Unaware of the danger behind him, Father Sánchez was struck on the head and pinned against the lectern as the structure came crashing down.
As the live stream continued running, horrified parishioners gasped and screamed in panic, with several rushing to the altar to lift the heavy cross and call emergency services.
Despite the rapid response from worshippers and arriving emergency medical personnel, Father Sánchez succumbed to his severe injuries.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil formally confirmed his passing in a poignant social media statement: "We announce that our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR, who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father's House to rejoice in His presence and glory. Eternal rest grants unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him."
Local authorities and church officials have not yet issued an official explanation regarding what caused the large wooden fitting to detach from the wall. Questions remain whether the collapse was caused by structural deterioration, improper mounting, or age-related fatigue.
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in for Father Sánchez, whose final sermon encouraging believers to treasure their loved ones and cherish every moment now stands as a haunting testament to his memory.
