KARACHI — A routine fishing trip turned fatal off the coast of Karachi when a vessel carrying five fishermen capsized in the choppy waters near Sea View's Nishan-i-Pakistan monument. Emergency responders recovered the bodies of two fishermen, while two were successfully rescued and an active search operation remains underway for the final missing crew member.
The incident unfolded on Monday evening, September 28, 2026 when the fishing boat developed a sudden technical fault while navigating near the popular coastal landmark. Trapped by incoming waves, the vessel overturned, plunging all five men on board into the sea.
Local rescue teams, supported by the Edhi Foundation and maritime volunteers, rushed to the site shortly after distress signals were raised. Two of the fishermen were pulled from the water safely during the initial rescue operation.
However, rough conditions complicated the search for the remaining three crew members. The search yielded tragic results on Tuesday when rescue teams recovered two bodies from the water. Official statements confirmed that one of the deceased was identified as 55-year-old Abdul Salam, son of Fateh Ali, while the identity of the second victim remains unconfirmed pending official identification procedures. Edhi ambulances subsequently transported both victims to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) to undergo necessary legal and medical formalities.
Rescue 1122 and emergency services continue to comb the coastal waters near Clifton and Sea View in hopes of locating the remaining missing fisherman. Local maritime authorities have urged small fishing vessels to exercise extreme caution in the area while search efforts remain active.
As families of the victims gather along the shoreline, community leaders have raised concerns over the lack of safety equipment and delayed emergency warnings for small fishing crews operating along the coast. Officials from the Sindh Ports and Shipping Department announced that an inquiry has been initiated to determine whether the vessel complied with standard safety regulations, including the availability of life jackets and functional navigation instruments. Meanwhile, local fisherman unions have called for enhanced maritime safety measures and improved emergency broadcast systems to prevent similar tragedies in Karachi's increasingly treacherous coastal waters.
