Tragedy at Sea: 9 Military Personnel Killed in Kazakhstan Naval Exercise

AKTAU, Kazakhstan — A routine military training mission ended in disaster on Thursday, September 24, 2026 after severe weather caught troops off guard off the coast of Kazakhstan’s southwestern Mangystau region, leaving nine military personnel confirmed dead and several others missing in the Caspian Sea.

The incident occurred as units of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan were executing combat-training maneuvers along the coastline. According to preliminary reports from the Ministry of Defense, a sudden, dramatic shift in weather conditions accompanied by fierce, intensifying winds generated massive waves that swept 19 servicemen directly into the water.

Emergency response protocols were immediately activated across the region. Joint search and rescue teams—including naval vessels, emergency services personnel, and military aviation assets—were deployed to the scene to locate the stranded personnel.

By Thursday afternoon, officials confirmed that nine bodies had been recovered, while three servicemen were pulled from the sea alive and treated for exposure and injuries. Active maritime and aerial searches remain underway to locate the remaining missing service members.

Defense Minister Lieutenant General of Aviation Dauren Kosanov has personally deployed to the Mangystau region alongside a high-level military commission to coordinate the ongoing rescue operations and launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The tragedy has prompted immediate calls for a rigorous review of safety protocols and weather monitoring systems during maritime exercises. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the fallen servicemen, declaring a period of national mourning and assuring that those responsible for any lapses would be held accountable, emphasizing that the state will provide all necessary support to the grieving families and the survivors.

In response to the incident, naval operations in the Caspian Sea have been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. The high-level military commission, led by Minister Kosanov, will scrutinize the operational planning, command decisions, and the adequacy of equipment and training, ensuring that all aspects of the training mission are thoroughly analyzed to prevent similar disasters in the future and to maintain the integrity and safety of Kazakhstan's armed forces.
