Tragedy at Polish Abbey: Knife Attack Leaves 1 Dead and 4 Wounded

JAROSŁAW, Poland — A knife attack at a historic Catholic monastery in southeastern Poland left one priest dead and four others injured on Thursday morning, September 24, 2026 after a suspect went on a stabbing spree through the premises.

The violent incident occurred at the 17th-century Benedictine Sisters' Abbey complex in Jarosław, located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Ukrainian border. Authorities arrested a 31-year-old Ukrainian national at the scene shortly after emergency calls were placed.

Investigators reported that the suspect entered the abbey complex and seized a large knife from an on-site kitchen before attacking clergy members and worshippers gathering ahead of a morning service.

The attacker first stabbed a priest in an adjoining area before moving into the church where confessions were taking place, causing widespread panic among churchgoers. In total, five individuals—four men and one woman—were struck, including three Catholic priests.

The incident resulted in severe casualties, including the death of Fr. StanisławZbojnowicz, who succumbed to his injuries despite emergency medical intervention. Four other victims—comprising two additional clergy members and two laypeople—were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment, while Polish police successfully disarmed and arrested the 31-year-old perpetrator directly at the scene.

Local prosecutors in Przemyśl confirmed that murder and attempted murder charges are being prepared as investigators work to establish a definitive motive. Preliminary inquiries indicate the suspect had traveled into Poland from Germany prior to arriving in Jarosław.

Town officials in Jarosław declared a period of local mourning through the weekend, while national and international leaders strongly condemned the tragic act of violence.

In the wake of the tragedy, local religious leaders and community organizations have organized community prayer vigils and grief counseling sessions across Jarosław to support traumatized parishioners and residents. Security measures around neighboring religious institutions and historic cultural sites throughout the region have also been heightened as local police work alongside state security agencies to thoroughly audit site safety protocols.
