Tragedy at PIMS: Explosive Ward Fire Claims 14 Newborns

ISLAMABAD — A devastating early-morning inferno tore through the neonatal nursery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 leaving at least 14 newborn infants dead after an air conditioning unit compressor exploded inside the Mother and Child Hospital (MCH) wing.

The blast occurred around 6:45 a.m. on the third floor of the facility’s gynecology unit. The initial explosion triggered a massive fire that rapidly swept across the neonatal ward, feeding on high-pressure oxygen supplies and trapped incubators housing vulnerable infants.

Of the 15 to 16 infants present in the ward at the time of the explosion, only one baby was successfully pulled to safety by hospital medical staff. Emergency personnel, including six fire engines and four ambulances, rushed to the scene shortly before 7:00 a.m. to battle the blaze and initiate cooling operations.

Thick smoke filled the upper floors, forcing panicked medical staff, newly mothers, and patients to evacuate down staircases while firefighters scaled ladders and broke windows to reach the flames. The disaster sparked immediate grief and anger outside the state-run hospital—Islamabad’s largest public medical complex—where families had gathered awaiting news of their infants.

Distraught relatives and healthcare advocates pointed to severe administrative lapses, noting that the fire broke out in a section of the facility where active repair and structural renovation work was underway.

In response to the tragedy, top government leadership issued immediate directives to address the crisis and hold responsible parties accountable. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the loss of life an "irreparable tragedy" and ordered a multiagency investigation, demanding strict consequences for anyone found negligent.

Concurrently, President Asif Ali Zardari offered his condolences to the grieving families while urging a comprehensive audit of fire safety systems and emergency procedures across all state hospitals. Meanwhile, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal announced he was traveling directly to Islamabad to oversee the official response and ensure full administrative accountability.

The Islamabad District Magistrate has established a fact-finding committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner general, directing the panel to evaluate compliance with safety protocols and submit its findings within 24 hours.
