DARWIN, Australia — An Australian Army soldier has died and five others have been injured during a training exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area in the Northern Territory, the Department of Defense confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at the extensive military base located approximately 115 kilometers southeast of Darwin. Emergency services were alerted around 4:30 p.m. following reports of a vehicle crash within the training grounds.
A multi-agency emergency response was launched immediately following the report. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro confirmed that emergency services worked through the evening to transport the injured soldiers to medical facilities.
Two personnel were airlifted by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at approximately 7:30 p.m., while three additional soldiers were transported via fixed-wing aircraft around 9:30 p.m.. Details regarding the severity of their injuries have not yet been released.
The Department of Defense issued a formal statement confirming the loss and confirming that the soldier's family had been notified.
"Defense can confirm an Australian Army soldier has died during a training exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area," the statement read. "Next of kin have been notified. We request that the privacy of Defense members and families is respected at this time."
Defense Minister Richard Marles extended his deepest sympathies to the military community, acknowledging the tragic loss of "one of our finest soldiers."
"Australia’s service men and women do an exceptional job training and fighting for our country," Marles said in a statement. "This work in the defense of our nation carries risk. Our thoughts in this difficult time are with their family and friends."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also offered his condolences, reflecting on the constant hazards faced by service members during routine preparations.
"There are no safe or easy days for those who serve in our country’s name," Prime Minister Albanese stated. "This sad incident is a terrible reminder of what families take on when their loved one bravely puts on our nation’s uniform."
Northern Territory Police officers have been deployed to the Mount Bundey facility to assist military officials and conduct an investigation on behalf of the coroner to establish the cause of the accident. The Mount Bundey Training Area is a primary field site used heavily by the Australian Defense Force and allied partners for complex live-fire exercises, vehicle maneuvers, and tactical combat operations. Further updates are expected from Defense as investigations continue.
