SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir — A pleasant summer afternoon turned tragic on Friday, July 3, 2026 when two young boys drowned while bathing in Dachigam Nalla in the Theed area of Harwan, on the outskirts of Srinagar.

While both minors were quickly pulled from the water by emergency teams and local residents, one has tragically lost his life, and the other remains in critical condition.

According to local officials, the two boys had gone to the stream to bathe and escape the rising summer temperatures. While in the water, they unexpectedly encountered difficulties and submerged beneath the surface, prompting immediate panic among onlookers.

A rescue operation was launched instantly. Police personnel stationed nearby, alongside a large group of brave local residents, rushed directly into the fast-flowing stream to locate and pull the drowning boys out.

Despite the rapid rescue, the prolonged submersion took a devastating toll. One of the teenagers could not be revived despite immediate medical intervention.

The second victim, identified as a Class 11 student from Srinagar, was rushed by emergency services to a nearby regional hospital in highly critical condition. He was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, where medical staff are closely monitoring his unstable vitals.

Officials noted that the incredibly prompt response from the local community and police was the only reason a larger tragedy involving more youths was averted.

Local police have officially taken cognizance of the tragic incident and have initiated standard legal proceedings to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the drownings.

In a statement, the local administration extended their thoughts and prayers to the families of the young boys during this incredibly difficult time. As summer temperatures rise, they strongly urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and strictly advise them against swimming in deep or unmonitored sections of rivers, streams, and reservoirs, warning that currents can change instantly and turn a recreational swim into a fatal accident.

The identity of the deceased teenager is being withheld by authorities until immediate family members have been formally notified.
