CALIFORNIA — A seasonal shopping trip turned into a scene of horror over the weekend when a targeted shooting broke out at a crowded Halloween store, leaving one person dead and six others injured as terrified shoppers scrambled for safety.
The gunfire erupted inside the seasonal retail location on Saturday evening, during peak hours when families and local residents were browsing for costumes and decorations ahead of the holiday.
Witnesses described a sudden outbreak of gunfire near the back of the building that sent shoppers dropping to the floor and rushing toward emergency exits. Store employees helped direct fleeing crowds out into the parking lot as local emergency services responded to multiple panicked 911 calls.
First responders arrived on the scene within minutes to find a chaotic environment outside the store, with witnesses assisting the injured and pointing officers toward the building.
"It started with what sounded like firecrackers, but then everyone started screaming and running," said one witness who was inside at the time. "People were knocking down display racks just trying to find a way out or somewhere to hide."
Emergency personnel confirmed that one victim died at the scene from gunshot wounds, while six additional individuals suffered injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to trauma sustained during the sudden crowd stampede. The single fatality was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics. Meanwhile, the six injured victims were transported to nearby regional trauma centers, with several listed in stable condition and others undergoing emergency treatment.
Law enforcement officers immediately cordoned off the shopping center complex, shutting down surrounding roads to establish a secure perimeter and allow ambulances swift access to the scene. Initial assessments by investigators indicate that the shooting was not a random act of mass violence, but rather a targeted confrontation that escalated inside the store. Authorities believe the suspect or suspects fled the area immediately following the gunfire.
Detectives and forensic technicians remained on scene late into the night, gathering physical evidence, collecting shell casings, and reviewing security footage from inside the store and surrounding retail businesses. Police are actively following leads to identify and apprehend those responsible, urging anyone with information or eyewitness video to contact local authorities immediately.
