BANGKOK — A routine workday ended in horror at a high-rise construction site in Bangkok’s Lak Si district after a construction worker fell from a towering crane and became fatally entangled in its cable roller mechanism.
The incident occurred at a major building development situated along Soi Chaeng Watthana 10. Emergency services and first responders were called to the scene following reports that a worker had plunged from an elevated position on the site's tower crane.
According to preliminary reports from local authorities, the worker lost his footing or balance while operating at height. During the fall, he came into contact with the crane's heavy-duty cable assembly, becoming pinned and trapped within the moving roller apparatus before co-workers could intervene or stop the machinery.
Rescue teams dispatched to the site faced significant challenges reaching the worker due to the elevation and the complex entanglement within the mechanical components. Paramedics confirmed that the victim succumbed to severe trauma sustained in the accident before he could be safely extracted.
Metropolitan Police officers from the local station arrived shortly after to secure the area and initiate an immediate investigation. Forensic teams and structural safety inspectors are currently examining the equipment and interviewing site supervisors to determine whether safety protocols were breached or if a mechanical malfunction contributed to the fall.
Work at the construction site has been temporarily suspended while authorities conduct a full review of the incident and inspect the site's safety equipment.
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns surrounding safety standards at urban construction sites across the capital, where rapid high-rise development continues at a brisk pace. Labor rights advocates and workplace safety organizations are calling on regulatory bodies to enforce stricter safety checks and mandatory harness protocols to prevent similar fatal accidents in the future.
