BANGKOK — A solemn gathering turned into a scene of sheer terror on Saturday evening, August 1, 2026 after a gunman opened fire on a crowd of mourners at a local temple in Bangkok’s Bang Kapi district, leaving one man dead and two others injured.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, transforming a peaceful ritual of final farewells into a deadly tragedy.
The shooting took place at approximately 7:30 PM at Pavilion 16 within the Bueng Thong Lang Temple grounds. Witnesses described a chaotic scene that unfolded in a matter of seconds.
According to police reports, an unidentified long-haired man wearing a black shirt rode up to the front of the pavilion on a blue motorcycle. Without warning, the assailant drew a handgun and fired multiple rounds directly into the assembled crowd of mourners.
"Everything happened so fast," one witness recalled. "We were paying our respects, and the next thing we knew, gunshots were ringing out and people were screaming, scrambling for cover."
Immediately after unleashing the volley of gunfire, the shooter accelerated his motorcycle and fled through the temple's main entrance.
Emergency services and local police arrived at the temple complex shortly after the shooting. Three victims, all suffering from gunshot wounds, were quickly triaged by first responders and rushed to the nearest hospital.
Tragically, one man succumbed to his severe injuries and was pronounced dead. The two other victims remain hospitalized, receiving treatment for their injuries. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identities of the deceased or the wounded.
Bangkok law enforcement has launched a full-scale investigation into the attack. Forensics teams spent Saturday night combing Pavilion 16 for ballistic evidence, shell casings, and reviewing security footage from the temple’s surveillance system to track the suspect's escape route.
At this stage, investigators are exploring all potential avenues regarding a motive. While police have not confirmed whether the gunman specifically targeted an individual in the crowd or fired indiscriminately, they are actively interviewing witnesses and relatives of the deceased to determine if a personal dispute or grudge triggered the violence.
No arrests have been made as of Sunday morning, and a manhunt remains underway for the long-haired motorcyclist.
