TE HANA, Auckland — A massive commercial building fire has completely paralyzed State Highway 1 in northern Auckland, forcing emergency services to close the critical transport corridor in both directions. Multiple fire crews from across the region are on-site battling the raging inferno, which has caused unprecedented traffic gridlock across the network.

The alarm was raised at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, when emergency dispatch received multiple calls regarding thick, black smoke pouring from a commercial property directly adjacent to SH1 in Te Hana, just north of Wellsford.

By the time first responders arrived, the structure was completely engulfed in flames. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) quickly upgraded the incident, dispatching more than a dozen fire appliances, including specialized aerial units and water tankers, to combat the blaze.

Firefighters faced intense heat and volatile conditions as the fire ripped through the building's roof, causing a partial structural collapse. Thick plumes of toxic smoke rolled across the adjacent roadway, severely reducing visibility and creating highly hazardous driving conditions.

"Our primary focus is containing the blaze to prevent it from spreading to neighboring commercial properties and rural vegetation," a FENZ incident commander stated. "Due to the proximity of the building to the highway and the danger of flying embers, an immediate total closure of State Highway 1 was necessary."

The Detour Dilemma: NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has issued an urgent warning to motorists, advising them to delay all non-essential travel through the area. Heavy vehicles and long-haul freight corridors are experiencing severe delays as local diversions are unsuited for high-capacity trucks.

Police have established extensive cordons, diverting northbound traffic at Wellsford and southbound traffic at Mangawhai Road. The sudden closure of the region's primary artery has triggered miles of gridlocked traffic, trapping hundreds of commuters and freight trucks along the route.

St John ambulance crews rushed to the scene as a precautionary measure, but initial reports indicate that all occupants of the building were evacuated safely. No injuries have been reported so far. Power authorities were also forced to cut electricity to local lines as a safety measure, temporarily leaving several surrounding businesses and properties without power.

The highway closure is expected to remain in place well into the evening as emergency crews continue to dampen down hot spots and structural engineers assess the stability of the remaining walls. A formal forensic investigation into the origin and cause of the fire will begin once the site is deemed completely safe.
