The Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland upheld Liberian former rebel commander Alieu Kosiah’s 20-year sentence for war crimes, closing the country’s first war-crimes trial. The ruling confirms his conviction for rape, murder and other offenses committed during Liberia’s civil war in the 1990s. The court overturned a separate conviction for crimes against humanity, ruling that the offense could not be applied retroactively because Switzerland introduced it into law in 2011. Victims’ representatives hailed the landmark ruling for survivors and Liberia.
