Top European Parliament Honor to Be Awarded for First Time

On May 20, 2026, the European Parliament will officially present the European Order of Merit, a new distinction aimed at honoring individuals who significantly contribute to European integration and uphold the bloc's fundamental values. Among the first recipients are prominent figures such as Angela Merkel, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Lech Walesa. Although Zelenskyy will not be able to attend the event in person, the honor reflects the importance of their contributions.

The European Order of Merit comes in three tiers, with Merkel, Zelenskyy, and Walesa receiving the highest level of recognition. Other notable recipients include Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's top diplomat, Maia Sandu, President of Moldova, and Jean-Claude Trichet, former President of the European Central Bank, who will receive lower levels of the award. Approximately 13 out of 20 laureates are expected to attend and deliver brief speeches during the ceremony.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized that this award acknowledges those who have not merely believed in Europe but have actively helped to shape it. She remarked, “Europe has always been built by people... This commitment deserves to be celebrated.”

The award ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. local time in Strasbourg, addressing a gathering that underscores the shared values and goals of the European Union.
