Tokyo School Fire: 10 Injured and 300 Evacuated as Flames Break Out During Classes

TOKYO, Japan — A Friday morning at an elementary school in northern Tokyo descended into panic when a sudden fire broke out on the building’s top floor. The incident forced a mass evacuation of around 300 students and staff as thick black smoke began pouring from the windows, leaving ten people injured.

The Tokyo Fire Department and local police confirmed that the blaze erupted during active classes, causing widespread alarm across the neighborhood.

Emergency services were alerted shortly before 11:00 AM on Friday, June 19, 2026 after smoke was spotted rising from the fourth floor of Takinogawa Daisan Elementary School in Tokyo's Kita Ward.

According to school officials, a fifth-grade class was underway in the music classroom when teachers noticed a strong burning smell emanating from an adjacent musical instrument storage room. Upon opening the door, teachers discovered smoke, and a fire alarm immediately echoed through the hallways.

Because the storage area lacked an automated sprinkler system, the flames quickly took hold, spreading rapidly through the fourth-floor ventilation and structure.

As fire alarms rang out, teachers and staff scrambled to guide approximately 300 students out of the classrooms and into the schoolyard. Many children were seen wearing protective hoods routinely kept in Japanese schools for disaster preparation.

While hundreds managed to reach safety quickly, the rapid spread of smoke blocked immediate escape routes on the upper floor. Firefighters arriving at the scene had to execute emergency rescues, utilizing ladders to safely bring down three pupils and one teacher who were trapped on the upper levels. Onlookers reported a frantic scene as media and emergency helicopters circled overhead while parents rushed to the area to locate their children.

Ultimately, 10 individuals—consisting of eight pupils and two teachers—were transported to local hospitals. The majority of the casualties suffered from smoke inhalation. However, the physical chaos of the evacuation resulted in more severe injuries: two students sustained arm fractures from falls, and a female teacher suffered a fractured hip. Authorities confirmed that all hospitalized individuals remained conscious.

A massive emergency task force, including 75 fire engines and dozens of firefighters, battled the blaze for nearly three hours before successfully bringing it under control. The fire burned through approximately 200 square meters of the school building's fourth floor, leaving parts of the exterior charred and blackened.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and local fire investigators have launched a joint probe into the exact cause of the disaster. Preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have originated from an unused stove or electrical issue inside the instrument storage unit.
