Tinderbox Coast: Major Incident Declared as Huge Wildfire Nears Suffolk Nuclear Plant

DUNWICH, SUFFOLK — A major incident has been declared along the Suffolk coast after a massive, fast-moving wildfire broke out on Dunwich Heath, triggering emergency evacuations of nearby residential areas and putting emergency services on high alert due to its proximity to the Sizewell B nuclear power station.

The blaze erupted at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, tearing rapidly through the bone-dry shrubland of the protected National Trust nature reserve.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service deployed multiple crews from stations including Leiston, Reydon, Southwold, and Halesworth to combat the spreading front. Fueled by unseasonably dry weather and unpredictable coastal winds, the wildfire quickly escalated into a dynamic and dangerous incident, sending massive plumes of thick smoke visible for miles across the county.

As the flames crept closer to residential boundaries, emergency services ordered the immediate evacuation of nearby homes threatened by the thick smoke and advancing fire line.

Displaced residents were directed to a temporary emergency refuge set up at Westleton Village Hall, where local authorities and partner agencies began providing updates, emergency provisions, and support. People living nearby who were not directly evacuated have been urged to keep all windows and doors firmly shut to avoid severe smoke inhalation.

Because Dunwich Heath directly borders the coastline just miles north of the Sizewell nuclear complex, the rapid spread of the fire initially triggered immense public anxiety regarding a potential threat to the facility.

In an official statement released early Thursday morning, fire authorities sought to reassure the public that the nuclear power station is not in immediate danger.

"At this time there is no current risk to Sizewell B, due to the distance from the fire and the direction it is travelling (Easterly)," Suffolk Fire and Rescue confirmed. "However, this is a live and dynamic situation and as a result, any further updates will be shared accordingly."

Dozens of firefighters remain on the scene, utilizing specialized off-road water tenders and high-volume pumps to create a defensive perimeter and contain the blaze before it shifts toward local infrastructure.

Members of the public are being strictly advised to stay completely clear of Dunwich Heath and the surrounding coastal paths. Keeping the area accessible ensures emergency vehicles and environmental response teams can continue their crucial operations without hindrance. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as teams focus entirely on containing the flames.
