Ngari, China— A glacier collapse in Tibet triggered an ice-mud surge on October 31, 2026, killing an unknown number of people, as teams recovered 1,000 personal belongings before ending the search for missing victims.
The collapse happened at dawn on a nameless glacier above a seasonal herder corridor in western Tibet. Witnesses said they heard a sharp crack. Then a white wall came down. Ice mixed with mud, rock and meltwater surged down the valley at high speed. It was over in minutes.
The surge ran nearly four kilometers. It buried a temporary camp where road workers and herders were staying. Tents were flattened. A parked excavator was pushed 200 meters. When it stopped, the valley floor was covered in gray ice-mud three meters deep in places.
Local authorities said the area is so remote that the first call came via satellite phone six hours later. A county emergency team walked in. They found no survivors in the core zone. They found shoes, coats, phones, prayer beads. Items were laid out on a tarp. Officials counted 1,000 pieces.
The search lasted two days. Soldiers, police and local herders used poles to probe the ice-mud. Dogs were flown in from Lhasa. The mix was too thick. It refroze overnight. One rescuer said his boots froze to the surface. Another said the mud swallowed a shovel whole.
Officials said the glacier was known to be unstable. Temperatures in western Tibet have risen fast in the past decade. Glaciers are thinning and retreating. Meltwater builds inside. That water can burst out. This year’s summer was hotter than average.
No final death toll was released. The public notice said the search for missing victims was ended due to extreme conditions and secondary collapse risk. It said families had been notified. It listed 1,000 personal belongings recovered for identification. Photos would be shown to families in Shiquanhe.
The regional government said it would monitor nearby glaciers with drones. It said herders should avoid valley floors in the melt season. It did not say if early warnings had been issued for this glacier.
By evening, the team withdrew to a safe camp downstream. The surge field was marked off. The ice-mud was already hardening.
