“Through the Fog of Fear: Indians Return, Grateful After Iran’s Unrest”

There are moments when the journey home becomes more than just a flight or a drive — it becomes a story of relief, resilience, and reassurance after days marked by uncertainty and fear. For several Indian nationals returning from Iran this week, their arrival back in New Delhi was greeted not just by family and loved ones but by heartfelt expressions of gratitude toward the Government of India. Their thanks were rooted in memories of tense days in Iran, where widespread protests, internet blackouts and deteriorating security conditions had made daily life unpredictable and — at times — dangerous.

The protests in Iran, initially triggered by economic and political grievances, have in recent weeks grown in scale and intensity, drawing international attention for both the violence on the streets and the government’s response. In response to the escalating unrest, the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued advisories urging Indian students, pilgrims, tourists and professionals to leave the country using all available means, including commercial flights, and to avoid areas of demonstrations.

One returnee from Iran described the situation there as “bad” and recalled how difficult it became to stay in touch with family back home when internet services were shut down, leaving many trying to communicate without regular connectivity. The same individual expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to share information and support those wanting to leave Iran as soon as it was feasible. “The Government of India is cooperating a lot, and the Embassy provided us with information on leaving Iran as early as possible,” he told ANI reporters at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

Another Indian who had spent weeks in Iran spoke of encountering crowded streets and crowds during the protests, saying, “The protests there were dangerous. The Indian government has made a very good effort and brought the people back,” highlighting the fear many felt amid a backdrop of tension and uncertainty. Families gathered at the airport to receive their loved ones, some of whom had been unable to reach home or connect with relatives for several days due to disruptions in communications.

These heartfelt thank‑yous to the government reflect not only relief at returning safely but also broader concerns about the security and welfare of Indians abroad during times of unrest. As the situation in Iran continues to evolve, with thousands of Indian nationals still residing there and monitoring ongoing developments a priority for New Delhi, the recent returns stand as a reminder of the role that diplomatic channels and advisories play in ensuring citizen safety far from home.
