Three Weeks from Silence: How Tovala’s Founder Navigated a Startup’s Most Fragile Moment

Three Weeks from Silence: How Tovala’s Founder Navigated a Startup’s Most Fragile Moment

In the early months of 2020, the world seemed to pause in an unfamiliar stillness. Offices emptied, travel slowed, and uncertainty settled over industries that only weeks before had appeared steady. For many young companies, the moment arrived not as a gradual challenge but as a sudden question of survival.

Inside one startup’s offices, that question became painfully literal. The company had only weeks of cash remaining.

At the center of the story was David Rabie, founder of the Chicago-based food technology company Tovala. His business combined a countertop smart oven with a subscription meal service—customers could scan a code on packaged meals, allowing the oven to automatically cook dishes with precise timing and temperature. The concept blended hardware, software, and food logistics into a single ecosystem.

But by February 2020, the company’s future looked uncertain. A planned Series B funding round collapsed unexpectedly, leaving the startup with roughly three weeks of cash left to operate. For many companies, such a moment marks the quiet end of an experiment.

Instead, it became the beginning of an unexpected turn.

Rabie and his team moved quickly to preserve the company. Hiring slowed, spending tightened, and the focus shifted toward sustaining the core product and existing customer base. The strategy was not expansion but survival—keeping the company alive long enough to find its footing again.

Then the world changed.

As the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped daily routines, millions of people began cooking and eating at home more frequently. Demand surged for meal services and kitchen technologies that simplified food preparation. Tovala’s combination of ready-to-cook meals and a smart oven designed for convenience suddenly aligned with the moment.

Orders began rising. Customers who wanted restaurant-quality meals without the complexity of cooking discovered the system’s simplicity: scan the package, place the tray inside the oven, and let automation handle the rest. The technology reduced the friction of cooking while maintaining a sense of fresh preparation.

With demand increasing, the company stabilized and eventually secured additional funding. What had been a near-shutdown gradually evolved into sustained growth. Over the following years, Tovala expanded its customer base, broadened meal offerings, and scaled its subscription model.

Today, the company has grown into a nine-figure business—an outcome that once seemed unlikely during those anxious weeks when the bank balance was measured in days rather than quarters.

For Rabie, the experience reflects a familiar rhythm in the startup world: progress rarely moves in a straight line. Moments of near-collapse often coexist with opportunities that emerge unexpectedly from broader shifts in society.

The early pandemic months were defined by uncertainty across the global economy. Yet for some companies—particularly those connected to the rhythms of home life—they also created conditions for reinvention.

Looking back, the moment when Tovala had only three weeks of cash remaining now appears less like a final chapter and more like a narrow passage through which the company had to pass. On the other side, a different path opened—one shaped by timing, resilience, and the unpredictable ways technology can intersect with everyday life.
