Three Times a Target: Trump Survives Latest Assassination Attempt at D.C. Gala

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For the third time in less than two years, the nation is reeling from an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump. On Saturday night, April 25, 2026, the celebratory atmosphere of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton dissolved into a scene of terror as a gunman opened fire near the main security screening area, just feet from the ballroom where the President and the nation's political and media elite were gathered.

The suspect, identified by law enforcement as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was apprehended by Secret Service agents after a violent struggle. The President, who was uninjured, later addressed the country from the White House, remaining defiant while acknowledging the "dangerous profession" he has embraced.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. EDT, as guests were beginning their first course, a series of gunshots rang out near the magnetometers. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was near the entrance, reported seeing the gunman fire what appeared to be "a very serious weapon" at least six times before being tackled.

Inside the ballroom, the response was instantaneous. Secret Service "jump teams" swarmed the stage, shielding President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump before whisking them through a service exit. Simultaneously, agents ordered the 2,600 attendees—including Vice President JD Vance and the entire Cabinet—to "get down." Journalists and celebrities alike ducked under tables as tactical teams with long guns took positions on the dais.

Cole Tomas Allen, described by authorities as a former teacher and tutor from the Los Angeles area, had reportedly checked into the hotel as a guest. Officials recovered a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives at the scene.

While the FBI and Director Kash Patel are currently investigating a motive, the President described Allen as a "sick person" and a "lone wolf" during a midnight press conference. "When you're impactful, they go after you," Trump told reporters, still wearing his tuxedo. "Today we need levels of security that probably nobody has ever seen before."

The carnage was limited by the quick action of the Secret Service. One agent was struck by a bullet during the struggle to subdue Allen, but his life was saved by his ballistic vest. No other injuries were reported among the guests, though the psychological impact was evident as attendees sang "God Bless America" and "USA" while waiting for the hotel to be cleared.

White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang confirmed that the dinner—which Trump was attending for the first time as a sitting president—would be rescheduled within 30 days.

As Washington remains under heightened security, the focus shifts to how a third attempt was able to come so close to the President in a city that was supposed to be under a "ring of steel" for the National Special Security Event.

The President concluded his remarks late Saturday with a message of resilience: "We’re not going to let anybody take over our society. The show will go on."
