Three Men Gunned Down Inside Car in Khayelitsha After Passenger Opens Fire

CAPE TOWN — A brutal shooting inside a vehicle claimed the lives of three men in Khayelitsha late Thursday afternoon, September 17, 2026 after a fellow occupant drew a firearm and opened fire at point-blank range before fleeing the scene.

The fatal incident unfolded in the Site C section of the township when neighbors heard multiple gunshots echo from a parked vehicle along a residential street. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a male passenger rapidly exit the sedan shortly after the gunfire ceased and sprint into nearby alleyways.

Police and emergency medical services arrived at the scene to find three men inside the vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. All three victims—aged between 25 and 35—were declared dead at the scene by paramedics due to the severity of their injuries.

Detectives from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit and local forensics teams sealed off the area into the evening to collect spent cartridges, process the vehicle, and gather latent evidence.

While the motive behind the targeted shooting remains under investigation, police have launched a massive manhunt for the gunman. Authorities are urging anyone with information, CCTV footage, or dash cam recordings from the surrounding streets to contact Crime Stop immediately to assist in tracking down the suspect.

Community leaders have voiced growing alarm following the attack, pointing to an escalating pattern of gun violence that continues to grip the township. Local oversight groups called for an increased police footprint in Site C, emphasizing that residents are increasingly living in fear of stepping outside their doors.

The shooting adds to a string of violent incidents across the Western Cape that have prompted provincial officials to demand tougher action against illegal firearms. Investigators are currently working to determine whether the victims and the shooter were known to one another or if the execution-style attack was linked to broader gang activities in the sector.

In response to the surge in violent crime, police management has deployed additional tactical units to patrol high-risk corridors throughout Khayelitsha. Officers are conducting targeted stop-and-search operations along key routes in an effort to intercept illicit weapons and track down leads connected to the fled suspect.
