Three Hundred Games, Three Goals, and a Night of What-Ifs

In hockey, as in life, chemistry is not something that can be diagrammed on a whiteboard or guaranteed by a contract. It arrives when it arrives, often in the least expected place, often between the least expected people. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, it arrived Thursday night on a power play, when a puck slid between a player's own legs and found the back of the net.

Kirill Marchenko had a hat trick in his 300th NHL game, including a highlight-reel goal that briefly illuminated a night that ended in disappointment. The Maple Leafs lost 5-4 in overtime to the Buffalo Sabres, and Marchenko, ever his own harshest critic, blamed himself for the game-winner . "I will remember this night for sure, but it's so, so bad, that we lost the game," he said. "A win, it's more important, and I'm to blame because it's my mistake in overtime" .

Marchenko arrived in Toronto on September 28 in a blockbuster trade that sent Matthew Knies to Columbus, along with a six-year, $75 million contract extension that begins in 2027 . He started the season on the top line with Auston Matthews but struggled to find his rhythm, managing just one goal and five assists in his first seven games . Head coach Jim Hiller decided to shake things up before Thursday's game, moving William Nylander up to play with Matthews and placing Marchenko on John Tavares's wing.

The change worked almost immediately. Tavares passed from the slot as Marchenko skated backward across the Sabres' crease. Marchenko slid the puck between his own legs and flipped it past the Buffalo goaltender to give Toronto a 2-1 lead . "I mean those were big-time goals, right?" Hiller said. "He's got that dynamicism for sure, and we're going to need that" .

The chemistry was extinguished in the third period when Tavares was injured after an awkward collision with Buffalo forward Josh Norris. He lay on the ice for a minute before skating off, favoring his left leg, and did not return . Hiller had no update on his condition after the game.

Marchenko wasn't even aware it was his 300th NHL game until a reporter mentioned it at the morning skate. "Every time when you're asked like, 'How's your career going?' It's a good career, but I hope it will be better, and I can be better, for sure," he said . For now, the Leafs have a glimpse of what Marchenko can be—and a question about whether the line that unlocked him will stay intact.
