NEWPORT, Wales — Three schoolchildren have been taken to hospital after a public service bus carrying local students struck a low railway bridge on Tregare Street near Maindee West in Newport, Gwent.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. as the vehicle was transporting pupils to nearby secondary schools, including Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed and St Julian's School. The impact tore off a section of the bus’s upper structure, prompting a major response from emergency services.
Emergency services—including Gwent Police, the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and the Welsh Ambulance Service—arrived at the scene within minutes.
A nearby day nursery, Lullabyz, opened its doors to allow paramedics to triage and examine shaken students away from the crash site. Three pupils sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital for further observation and medical care. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
"Officers attended along with crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service," a spokesperson for Gwent Police confirmed. "Three children have sustained injuries and will be attending hospital for treatment; their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening."
The collision caused significant travel disruption across the regional rail network. Rail lines running through Newport station were temporarily blocked while Network Rail engineers conducted safety inspections on the bridge structure.
Services operated by Transport for Wales, Great Western Railway, and CrossCountry faced cancellations and delays. Local roads around Tregare Street and East Usk Road remained cordoned off during recovery operations.
Newport Transport and Newport City Council have launched formal inquiries into the cause of the collision.
"We are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are fully cooperating with the relevant authorities," Newport Transport stated, emphasizing that student welfare remains their primary concern as investigations continue.
