They Killed Our River: Taff's Well and the Kerosene That Spread

A river is not merely water moving between banks. It is a name, a history, a neighbor. In Taff's Well, a village in Rhondda Cynon Taf, the river is so central to identity that the place itself is named after it. When something poisons the water, the injury is not measured only in kilometers or liters. It is measured in the silence of birds that no longer sing and the absence of fish that no longer rise.

Kerosene from a fuel leak at the GE Aerospace site near Taff's Well has spread nearly 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) down the River Taff, according to Natural Resources Wales . The pollution was first reported on Saturday morning affecting at least one mile of the river, but later assessments showed it had traveled further as investigators worked to identify how the fuel entered an underground surface water drainage system . Up to 25,000 liters of kerosene are believed to have entered the water, according to residents who spoke with NRW .

GE Aerospace confirmed that fuel got into the river while repair work was taking place at its site nearby. In a statement, the company said the safety of employees, neighbors, and the environment is its top priority, and that it is working closely with NRW and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to clean up the spill . Absorbent materials have been deployed to contain the leak, and NRW said the amount of fuel discharging from the drainage system has reduced significantly .

For residents, the impact has been visceral. Eurig Thomas, who lives in Taff's Well, described the smell as immediate and overwhelming: "It smelt like a petrol station, it hit you as soon as you came out" . Sarah Llewelyn said she had not slept in three days. "Friday afternoon lunchtime I opened the door and could smell fumes, it was burning my eyes," she said, calling it "a national disaster" .

Gareth Llewelyn, a former hazardous materials environmental protection officer with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, offered an assessment that was measured but grim. There is "no quick fix," he said, and the river will need "years not months" to restore. He visited the culvert across from the GE site and found it full of kerosene. "It doesn't mix with water and will continue to pollute," he explained. "They've torn the heart out of our community. The village is Taff's Well—it's named after the river. They've literally killed our river. If you go down there now there's no animals, no birds, they've killed all the fish" .

Public Health Wales has advised residents to keep windows and doors closed, avoid contact with the water, and call NHS 111 if they feel unwell . Water samples have been collected to assess the environmental damage, but the full extent will not be known for some time. The smell has died down, NRW said, and equipment is in place to collect the fuel. But the sheen on the water and the quiet where wildlife used to be remain.

The investigation into how the kerosene entered the drainage system continues. GE Aerospace has been asked for further comment. For the community of Taff's Well, the immediate crisis may be easing, but the longer work—the work of restoration, of holding accountable, of waiting for a river to remember how to be a river—has only begun.
