The work of local government has become more dangerous

There is a particular unease that settles over a civic building when the people who work there begin to fear the people they serve, a quiet erosion of the assumption that public life is conducted in safety. In Brisbane, that unease has become tangible. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has revealed that security at City Hall has been increased after multiple threats against councillors and staff, including threats to shoot him personally. One of the people who threatened him held a gun licence .

Schrinner spoke with a directness that carried the weight of someone who has been forced to think about his own mortality in the course of doing his job. "There's been multiple people who have threatened to shoot me as well, and one of them had a gun licence," he said. He described a broader increase in aggression toward elected representatives and called for the temperature of political discourse to be lowered. "Hatred and aggression then can turn into violence very easily, as we've seen, and that is not a good place for our society to be heading" .

The context for the security upgrade extends beyond Brisbane. The announcement came in the same week that federal MP Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Victoria, an attack that left her with life-threatening injuries and required the amputation of both legs. Schrinner referenced the attack and the broader climate of political violence, noting that the United States has a long history of assassinations and attempted assassinations that Australia should not emulate . Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett told media that authorities were battling a record wave of threats against MPs, driven by a toxic mix of personal grievances, online conspiracies, mental health vulnerabilities, and extremist ideologies .

The measures at City Hall include increased security presence and de-escalation training for staff. The threats are not abstract to the people who received them. Deputy Mayor Fiona Cunningham's Coorparoo ward office window was shattered two days before the 2024 election, allegedly by ball bearings fired from a paint gun . Staff members have been threatened. The training is designed to help them respond when a constituent becomes aggressive, when a meeting turns hostile, when the ordinary business of local government becomes something else.

There is a tension in this response that cannot be fully resolved. A city hall is a public building, and the public must be able to enter it. The security measures are designed to protect without closing the doors, to create a buffer without creating a barrier. The lord mayor's call for cooler discourse is a recognition that the threat is not only external but cultural, that the language used in political debate can create the conditions for violence. The words come first. The actions follow.

For the councillors and staff of Brisbane, the increased security is a practical acknowledgment that the work of local government has become more dangerous than it should be. The threats are being taken seriously. The training is being delivered. The doors remain open, but the people behind them are watching more carefully.
