The witness has admitted his guilt; the question is what he heard

There is a strange intimacy that develops in a courtroom when one man's testimony becomes the thread that pulls another man toward judgment. The witness speaks, the accused listens, and the distance between them shrinks to the space between a question and an answer. In a Brampton courtroom this week, that space was occupied by memories of gold, of a truck, and of a single word: "OK."

Arsalan Chaudhary, who is serving a four-year prison sentence for his role in the 2023 Toronto Pearson airport gold heist, returned to the witness stand Monday in the trial of Parmpal Sidhu . Sidhu, a former Air Canada employee, has pleaded not guilty to charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence . Chaudhary testified that on the day of the theft, he told Sidhu the truck and driver were ready, and Sidhu replied, "OK" .

The heist itself remains one of the largest in Canadian history. Peel regional police have said 6,600 gold bars weighing more than 400 kilograms were stolen from a Pearson airport cargo bay on April 17, 2023, after arriving from Switzerland . Prosecutors allege that Sidhu provided a doctored waybill that allowed another man to pick up more than $22 million in gold and currency .

Chaudhary's testimony has been neither smooth nor simple. Last week, it was paused after he said recalling his alleged abduction in Pakistan had left him traumatized . He told the court he had been kidnapped and abused until he gave up the loot he had kept. He also testified that he planned the heist with another man still wanted by authorities and ended up with 30 percent of the boxes of one-ounce gold bars . He melted some of the gold before traveling to Pakistan, he said .

On Monday, Chaudhary returned to the stand and answered questions about his communications with Sidhu . The defense has not yet presented its full case, and the trial continues. Chaudhary's own sentence—four years, with 40 years to pay back $22 million in restitution—hangs over his testimony like a shadow, a reminder that the witness is not a neutral party but a man who has already admitted his part in the story .

What the court is left to weigh is not simply whether Sidhu said "OK," but what that word meant, and whether it connects him to the chain of events that emptied a cargo bay of gold and currency. The prosecution's case rests on the testimony of a man who has acknowledged his own guilt, and the jury will decide how much weight to give it.

The trial continues in Brampton. Sidhu remains presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
